We actually will be reading a whole series for Jan (I know, wishful thinking, but even if you only start the first book, that's fine too). The 
series is "The Dark is Rising Sequence" by Susan Cooper. The first book is called "Over Sea, Under Stone" the second is called "The Dark is Rising." These books range in length from about 130 pages to about 275 and are really easy reads as they are youth/teen fiction. Well, there's an element of Arthurian fantasy to them too. The second one especially is fun to read around Christmas time.
